Rosie: A Loyal Australian Shepherd
An Australian Shepherd is the heart of our adventures, anchoring us amidst North Vancouver Island’s rainforest and coastal beauty. Our outdoor journeys begin and end with her bright eyes alight with excitement. Rosie’s warm gentle spirit fills us with a sense of companionship and belonging. Her loyalty constantly surprises as she explores in a tricolour fur coat; a mosaic of black, caramel, and white tones melding seamlessly into the serenity of the great outdoors.
Rosie’s devotion to Christine and I is woven into the very fabric of our lives. She transforms every walk into an adventure of exciting possibilities. Her playful quirks and gentle nudges remind us to get-out-there, to relish discovery, to embrace the natural world.
Her favorite haunts are those that take us deep into the untamed heart of the Nimpkish Valley. A place where the world slows and the peace of new and old forests offer sanctuary from the bustle of daily life. It is in these wild hideaways that Rosie is in her element; her boundless curiosity and energy unleashed among towering evergreens. There, emerald crowns stretch skyward and trunks are clad in knitted coats of moss and lichen. The air is cool and moist, infused with the earthy aroma of damp soil and decaying wood. Our thoughts mingle with the crispness of the Pacific breeze whispering through valleys, trees, and wetlands.
She bounds playfully on a multi-coloured carpet of living greens; a forest floor blanketed with thick soft mats cushioning each step into paradise. The moss, sometimes a brilliant chartreuse and sometimes a deep mysterious green, clings to fallen logs, rocks, and the bases of ancient trees. It is an environment full of intrigue for the three of us. It springs to vibrant life in the moistness of the Pacific Northwest, draping everything in a soft, velvety shroud. Lichen too draws her attention with its pale, ghostly tendrils, decorating branches overhead and rock formations below, painting the landscape in subtle hues of silver and sage. Some crusty and flat, others bushy and bearded, continually cleansing the air of temperate rainforests. These pastel essential organics thrive only when undisturbed by pollution.
Amidst the undergrowth, salal bushes form dense thickets, their broad leathery leaves shine with drops of early morning mist and dampness; creating a sea of green sometimes waist high, tough stems weaving a living barrier through which Rosie nimbly weaves, undaunted and sure-footed. Salal blooms with small delicate white or pinkish minute urn-shaped flowers, giving way to summer clusters of deep blue-black berries, a favourite treat for bears and birds alike.
Rosie revels in these forest sanctuaries as Christine and I do. She darts along narrow, winding game trails, her nose quivering as she samples the multitude of scents the forest offers; wild mushrooms, decaying spruce and cedar, sweet floral notes from hidden trilliums, and the distant musk of passing Roosevelt Elk. Every sound is a mystery to solve: the knock knock knock of a woodpecker, the flutter of wings as a Ruffed Grouse takes flight, the faint splash of a stream trickling over stone.
More often than not, Rosie is the first to spot wildlife. Her sharp eyes quickly catch the subtle movements of black-tailed deer watching silently from a glade, or the swift dash of a red squirrel skittering up a Douglas fir.
Despite her adventurous spirit, Rosie is always attentive. Her cautiousness an art, honed by years of exploring where the unseen can trip the unwary and every rustle might reveal a hidden treasure; a cougar, black bear, a pine marten. She glances back often, making sure Christine and I are close behind, her expressive eyes filled with concern and caring. Rosie is not only our guide but our guardian, instinctively placing herself between us and the unknown. Her presence a source of comfort as we wander amongst alpine scrub, brushing through new second growth, or standing beneath the cathedral-like vaults of forest giants.
Together we discover enchanted hideaways known only to deer, wolves, and now to Rosie. Secret places where filtered sunlight creates shifting patterns amongst the flora. The air is so still you can hear the subtle sound of dew drops gently slipping off ferns. In these havens fallen branches lay hidden like ancient bones, surfaces softened by decay aided by mycelium as tiny mushrooms sprout in whimsical clusters. When pausing to contemplate in this wonder Rosie curls warmly upon our feet embracing us with a feeling of true magic: The wonderful sense of belonging to something timeless and wild.
Rosie’s devotion is not just as a protector but as a friend who shares our awe for the world of wooded naturalness. She is as much a part of the landscape as the salal and stately firs; her fur gleaming in the sunlight, her head tilted at the call of a raven, her paws moving softly over fallen cones and needles. Even on the coldest mornings, when frost crystals rims rose hips, and our breath hangs in the air, Rosie’s energy is undiminished. She leaps and bounds, chasing after the joys of a winter day, her tail a banner of happiness waving through the chill.
As dusk falls the forest hushes to an owl’s call, and the air grows heavy with the promise of night. Evergreens become shadowy sentinels, standing guard over our campsite. Rosie lays beside us, alert yet calm, her gaze sweeping the twilight of a woodland sunset. It is in these peaceful interludes, wrapped in the embrace of wonderful nature, that we are reminded of the true gifts our canine companions brings to our lives: unconditional love, loyalty, protection, companionship, and an infectious joy of life.
Through every season, snow, rain or shine, in the riotous green of spring, under the golden autumn leaves, on a winter’s frosty morning, and in the long, luminous summer evenings, Rosie is with us, constant and true. Her presence transforms hikes into journeys of discovery, filling each outing with laughter, wonder, and a deep enduring bond between a dog and those she loves. With Rosie by our side, the forests and woodlands are not just a backdrop for adventure: they are pathways of uncluttered simplicity.
In the gentle fading light of a life well lived, as the forest settles on our aging footsteps, Rosie’s quiet companionship is a thread connecting us to the wild heart of the land. Every adventure is more than a journey; it is an affirmation of the bond we share, a reminder that home is found not only among familiar walls but also in nature’s embrace guided by the loyal presence of a dear best friend. With Rosie by our side, each walk is richer, each day is brighter. Our lives forever changed by the joy and wonder of exploring this life together.
